No, it's better with 8 players. That way the game will always revolve around teamwork, which is the aim of Gears of War.
Think about it, in a big game you can use the huge map and wide range of distractions to cover yourself. In a smaller game on a smaller map, all you have to cover you is your team. See what i'm saying? I'm so happy that GoW is taking the steps to promote teamwork that it is because I know that it will be a solid game that will last a long time.
And yes, Charlie, the ENTIRE single player game can be taken on with a friend. In fact, your friend can hop in on your campaign mode at any time instantly since he will take the roll of a teammate who is by your side throughout the entire campaign.
