Shit, you wanna talk about Old School, I remember playing Dragon Warrior, the original, on NES. You guys might be more familiar with it as Dragon Quest. Hell, I still have Final Fantasy I on NES somewhere...along with all the original FF games on Gameboy (black and white)...those games were amazing. If you can find them, I'd highly recommend buying them.
As for VII...I tend to stay away from this argument, as it usually becomes heated very fast. VII made RPG's mainstream, and even today is one of the most influent games in video gaming history. It set a lot of standards for how an RPG should look (Cut-Scene's, emotive scenes within the game...hell, people will actually admit to crying during the Aerith death scene...before that game, that was something I've never seen done).
