Then why not get even more technical and say that none of the Final Fantasy games are true RPG's? because technically they are not, they are CRPG’s (Computer Role Playing Games). The real RPG’s would then be the table top games, or the pen and paper ones right? How come no one mentions that? It’s because most people here grew up with all the traditional turn based Japanese games and think of them as classic.
Like I said before the term RPG has evolved before and became a whole different beast. And guess what it happened again. Your right that it’s a action RPG but it’s just as much as an RPG as any final fantasy game. All the damage you do and take is governed by stats just like most other RPG’s out there. Hell, the only difference is you manually press the button to attack and defend instead of selecting it from a menu.

You can throw it under the "Action RPG" genre if you'd like, but to the purists, it won't be considered an RPG.
It's the fact that a lot of people in here have never played "real" RPG's, as I said before, most of you are too young. KOTR was a decent game, but far from best RPG ever. It's scary to see that what, only 5 people have mentioned FF before 7, and only 2-3 people have mentioned Chrono Trigger..it's actually sad to be honest. |
Crackdown has RPG elements but I agree that it’s not an RPG. But in Crackdown the damage you do is not very dependent on your stats or your characters abilities. In Oblivion most of your attacks are based on what your wearing, what your weapon is, any buffs that you may have, and your level. The game should not be compared to Crackdown or any game like that. Crackdown is an action game with minor RPG elements while Oblivion is a RPG with action elements.
You can still find the RPG’s you consider “real” anywhere. Companies still put them out in the hope of inspiring some old school nostalgic feel. Blue Dragon is old school in a way just updated with newer gen features.
And I’ve played through Final Fantasy 1 through 3 before (going back though 3 as we speak on my DS) but I didn’t mention them simply because they no longer hold up. They still are good games but most of the older games are arcane compared to what we have now. Really the only thing they are good for now is nostalgic purposes. It’s sort of like saying Goldeneye is still the best shooter ever made.
P.S: I’m curious 4ng31... What makes a “true” rpg for you?
