First you need to establish what kind of clan you want. Whether it be casual gaming, hardcore gaming or competetive gaming.

Then you need to think of a name that best suits your goal as well as your personality. You can figure this out after you aquire your main base of players, naming it after the attitude presented in that particular group. Also this will be the "image" you want to present.

Next you need to figure out how many members you want. If you do competetive gaming, you need to figure out how many main players you want, and how many "backups" you might need. This really depends on what your setup is, what games you're playing, and what your personal preference is. (I strongly suggest not falling into the "KSI" trap. That clan is so horrible, and they have a huge playerbase of crappy players. If you want to be taken seriously, dont' go that route)

Now you need to figure out who you want to include. If you know people already, that's good. Start some tryouts. If you don't, then start advertising yourself. Let people know up front what your goal for this clan is, and go from there.

If you want to go toward the competetive aspect, then you need to set up some sort of website or forums to get your clan out there. This also gives your potential clan members easy access to signing up or at the very least contacting you. This website also presents your image as well as the name.

Another thing.. if you're doing competitions... you really need reliable people. I cannot stress enough how irritating it is when you show up for a competition (whether it's something like gamebattles, or if it's a real tournament) and your main players don't show up. That's why you need a fill-in team just in case blowouts like this happen.

Lastly.. have fun with it. Even if it is competition, it's still supposed to be fun and healthy. If you find your clan members duking it out or getting irritated with each other, I suggest replacing and finding new members that work together. Team work is the key.

I hope this is a good starting point. At the very least, I hope it helps get you thinking and on the right track.
