If you are talking about Xbox Live activity as a whole, then it makes no difference. Their engines are powerful enough to run millions and millions of users. Do you not remember when Halo 3 was first launched? I saw close to 2,000,000 people currently online for a few days, and that's only Halo 3.
Check out G4, ATOS, the feed was about the downtime. They think it's to do with the convention/event happening next week.
