Grammar: Common Mistakes :) I hope this helps most of you guys so you can use proper words...lol I will update when I have time to put down more.
1) accept, except - Accept is a verb meaning "to receive," and except is a preposition meaning "other than" or "leaving out."
2) adapt, adopt, adept - Adapt means "to change" and adopt means "to take as one's own." You adapt to a new situation, while you are adept at knitting.
3) advice, advise - Advice is a noun and means "an opinion." Advise is a verb that means "to express an opinion to." One person gives good advice to another. She advises him to always tell the truth.
4) affect, effect - affect is usually a verb meaning "to influence." effect is usually a noun that means "result." there are times when effect can be used as a verb meaning "to cause."
5) aggravate, irritate- Aggravate means "to make something worse," and it should not be used in place of irritate. You might aggravate an old injury, but you are not aggravated with a friend, you are irritated with him.
6) a lot - A lot means "a great many," and is never spelled alot. However, there is a word "allot".
7) all ready, already - All ready functions as an adjective and simply means that everything or everyone is ready. already is an adverb meaning "even now" or "by or before this time." I have already done my chores. Are we all ready to go?
8) all together, altogether - All together means "all at once." Altogether means "completely."
9) among, between - Among and between are both prepositions. among is always used with three or more items, while between is used with two items.
10) amount, number - amount is used with quantities that cannot be counted; number is used with items that can be counted. There are a number of things to be concerned about. There is a large amount of sawdust on the floor. |
