| Does this sound like a cult to you? At my school there is this church retreat. It is called "Anti-och" and it supports working together, teamwork, and selflessness. Sounds good right? Well my friend's dad forced him to go, and he had the exact view of it as me (which is agnostic) then after he came back he wasn't anything the same. He used to be cool, he used to be an anti-conformist, he used to listen to good music. Now he listens to Christian rock, wears "Jesus rocks" shirts and religious icon shirts. Not that this is a bad thing, but this was so against his beliefs just 3 days before that it seems kind of suspicious.
Well this year the retreat, or cult, came along once again and turns out my buddy is RUNNING IT THIS YEAR. This year the people attending is full-scale, almost everyone is going.
This is when I start to think that it's REALLY a cult, and when the story heats up. Well 3 days before the meeting this girl I've had a crush on for a long time (Since 8th grade, and before this particular event I was finally starting to see a chance to get her to be mine) calls me and is like "OMG Andrew, you should go to Anti-och!" I say no and she doesn't stop bugging me about it.
She then tells all her friends that I'm not going. I now get harassed by about 20 people all day long about going to this stupid thing. The next day I finally get people to stop asking me and the girl I like(d) stops talking to me, and says she won't until I go. Funny huh? Now everytime I try to tell her that it's a stupid reason to stop talking to her friend, who was always there for her when she had boy troubles, was always nice to her even when she was mean to me, just because I don't want to waste a weekend at a retreat for something I personally don't believe in.
NOW after the meeting my best friend since 6th grade (4 years ago, I'm in 10th now) COMPLETELY snubs me. I talk to his other friend about it and he said that it was because I didn't go to the retreat, even though I said I would. Now REVERSE THIS. I never said that once correct?
Now, 2 days after the retreat I now have 4 friends that won't say a single word to me because I didn't go to that cult.
They all sat by me at lunch, now they sit with the "Jesus- Freaks" and leave me all alone.
I hate religions.

| I don't blame you. I lost friends because I'm atheist and when they offered me to go to church with them they stopped talking to me.
If they don't like you because you don't share their beliefs, let them go.

| Mockage is right, if they want to be the single-minded intolerant people they are, let them. I would try to go and expose this bullshit though. Cause it's just not right if they are doing is actually causing all of that, I know I would go for curiosity reasons, see how it actually effects them, what they are talking about, etc. Let them be intolerant. That could only lead downhill, so fuck 'em.

| Religion is for people who are afraid of the truth and are lost, well atleast Christianity. That's why I don't associate myself with religious people, except for my mormon friend, he's chill.

I don't know why religion gets to people and grasps them the way it does, why should they live on a leash? We only live once.

| Shit dude. That does sound like a cult. When I hear "cult" I think of the episode from Family Guy where Meg joins a cult and everyone kills themselves (lol). Maybe you should go once and see what it is. If it's something you truely are against then just don't go again. Just don't assume the worst when it comes to weird shit like this. However if you know exactly what they do and don't agree with it, then just tell your friends. "Guys I don't believe in this stuff and don't feel comfortable." If you have to give them and ultimatium; you or the Anti-och.
I personally am Catholic but I don't necessarily believe in everything they do. I believe abortion is up to the mother, you should be able to divorce, gays should be able to marry, and that's all I can think of ATM but you get the point.

/my2cents. | Sounds like Jim Jones, eh?
In truth, though, all major religions started as cults. This seems like one of those cults. It's good that you are not associating yourself with them. Any religious belief is cornerstoned on its ability to manipulate in the illusion of strange and vague shadows.
A friend is not a friend if he/she sees you for your superficial exterior and not your true self. |
