| What makes or breaks a game? (FPS) i've been pondering over a little issue of mine, and I'd like to see what other people think...
What makes or breaks a FPS?
Is it where you play? Is it the maps that count? Does the weapon and powerup placement dictate how good the game is when you play? It takes teamwork to dominate a map, doesn't it? Do you crave a balanced map and good gametypes?
or...
Is it how you play? Is the gameplay that counts? Should player power be limited? Do weapons have to require skill to use? Does the map you're playing on not matter if the weapons are designed correctly?
Tell me what you think. |

| | | Guest | personally i think the wepons need to have a good balence btween takeing a lil skill to use and no skil lol to give that carnage feel.
also def the mutli maps have to have a good layout and match the gameplay and wepons definatly
i dnt mind playing un ballanced maps so thats not a issue
oh ye and the gameplay has to b a nice speed not to fast(like quake) but not to slow(pdz) and the amount of damage u can take b4 u die and pu tonto sumone b4 they die should b just right for a good fire fight and none that one shot kill bolox(graw) or shoot 1000 bullets crap(farcry) | |

| Decent map size and every weapon needs another weapon that can beat it with skill.

| I would have to say that its a combination of things that makes an FPS good.
First off the maps need to fit the number of players playing. Its not fun to play 1v1 on a huge map, or 8v8 on a very small map. Also, the map layout needs to be simple. I really dont like the maps that have a lot of things everywhere, it just has to be extremely simple sorta like prisoner and HEH on H1.
Now that I think about it, i'm going to just skip the other reasons and just say this. Simplicity makes the best FPSs. Once there are too many options and too many things going on the game becomes too complicated for newcomers and to be decent you have to know a lot of stuff.
For instance halo 1 is a very simple game. It is very easy to pick up and start playing. What makes it so fun is that its very easy to start, but very difficult to master. Thats the beauty of it. A random person can pick it up and be somewhat ok at it, using grenades and the AR to kill a person here or there, but to be amazing you have to know a lot about the game like spawns weapon blasting etc.
Oh and the weapons need to be consistant aka Not Halo 2. (esp. shotgun)

| Hmmmm for me i would have to go with the following.
1. The maps have to be designed in a way where you can play competitively and they are balance so that not one side of the map has a huge advantage over another. Of course having the weapons balanced across the map as well.
2. The weapons need to take skill. Like Llama said for halo 1 i want it to be easy to learn but difficult to master. I wanna be able to tell who is average with this weapon and who could destroy people with it.
3. The gameplay is got to be solid as well. I dont like games where you have to wait around 20 min to shoot 5 rounds i want to run and gun. A fast paced game is the way to go for me.
4. I also agree with Blitz about how a person should die and how many shots it should take on average.
well thats all i can think of for now. Good chance i will come back and edit my post.

| i would definetly have to say that it is a good mix between all of the i think it has to have good gameplay and not to fast paced but not to slow paced feel
It needs good balenced weapons and balenced maps that arent biased to one playing style or team
I think as long as a game is really ballenced it should be good |

| What Mades A Game: balanced weapons, well desined maps, replay value, map editor, high definition, good textures, good control, requiring skill What Helps: Havoc Phisics, Real time lighting, Being hardcore to the genre What Hurts But Can Be Accepted: long load times(if there are good graphics), lack of multiplayer What Kills a game: Bland textures with poor graphics, long load times(poor graphics), repetitive gameplay, complete lack of phisics, shitty controls

| IMO i like the games that require some skill to use the weapons...halo 2 isnt too big on that...i like a mix between strategic maps and open (FFA like) maps...doesnt need the best graphics...a gravity engine would be nice...would like to be able to get to anywhere u see on a map, like going into building and stuff (for the smaller maps).

| I think it has a lot to do with how the game is controlled, like for instance i can't stand games like rainbow six but i love games like halo the control just seems easyer so the way you aim has a lot to do with it.
You need both weapons that require great skill and minimal skill ie the sniper/sword/rockets/br excetra.
an excellent multiplayer and thats it. |
