If you ask me it all seems like it's just giving us clues to the story of the Covenant and the Forerunners. In Halo 2 when the covenant stumble upon earth, they position themselves over Africa, Cairo Station. At this point there's a clue where Cortana says something like:
"They must have found us by accident. It's like they were looking for something but didn't expect to find Earth. So why attack us with such a small force? And why here of all places???"
And then a main earth location in multiplayer was Zanzibar, which I though odd to just throw that in there out of all the places on Earth.
And the fact that the Covenant Prophets seem to be hiding some secret to why they hate humans so much and why we are unholy means that the human race is mentioned in the old scriptures of the Prophets. Yet WE don't have any historical reference to the phrophets and the Covenant, or do we?
Africa is known as the Centre of Life itself and at the end of Halo 2 when the Arbiter asks the Oracle about the activation defence mechanism of all the Halos the Orcacle says:
"All the facilities are acivating their defence proceedure where they can be activated remotely."
Arbiter- "Activated? By what?"
Oracle- "By the Arc of coarse."
The scene then immediately cuts to Master Chief on the back of the attacking Covenant ship above, you guessed it Africa. One of the locations in Halo 3. So I'm thinking that the Arc is located in Africa (aka the Centre of Life) on Earth in the centre of all the Halo formations around the universe. And this would be why the Covenant stumbled upon Earth when they thought it was just a planet containing the Arc.
This could lead to us finding out that our ancient 'forefathers' were actually the ancient 'forerunners' and maybe the old Prophets knew this and they knew just how intellectually powerful or race could evolve to.
I don't know if this has seemed way obvious to everyone else but I noticed it in Halo 2 and probably more people did. Also that SOTA website really backs this theory up. Maybe when all the Halos were originally activated the Arc was a fallout shelter for the last few of the Forerunners and then they emerged with no technology and no more civilization so they started again and that's where we evolved from.
And MAYBE (we're grasping for straws now) that extract in that verse about the "keepers of the flame" is a reference to Humanity or our Ancient civilizations (Egyptians, Mayans, Aztecs) leaving symbols and clues about the Arc and the Great Journey...
