It's best if you weaken the vehicle before throwing the trip mine. I suggest doing it on Tsavo Highway (figuring that's the only level that has Trip Mines), go near a Chopper, shoot it a bit, make it try and ram you and throw the mine. See how it is on Easy though.
And you might be able to do it if you ever play Valhalla in ranked, and some random is retarded enough to drive a Warthog/Mongoose around.
