They can do a little more than that I think. Like adding resistances and whatnot. But they only work in the single player adventure mode (Subspace Emissary).

Anyways, I'd consider it reliable. I doubt Nintendo would take the time to screw everyone over by photoshopping one of their vids. The only way I see it being false right now would be if those portraits weren't those of Lucario or Ness (I think its safe to say that the one is jigglypuff).

| According to these leakers that they're all obsessed with, he is. But, like I said, I don't put too much stock in that yet. I do think its likely he'll be included though. I think it'd be almost hard for Sakurai to not include him, given the support he's garnered.
