Of course, even the most successful MMOs get sequels eventually, and it appears that Valve is at least tentatively working out the details of a Counter-Strike refresh.

"With Counter-Strike 2, there's a big question between, do we go start over from scratch and build this whole new game, do we do something that looks more like Team Fortress 2 that is rooted in the old game but has a ton of new stuff, or do we just sort of take everything that's new that we've released and put that out in a new box," remarked Lombardi.

"I think we're leaning more towards the two more radical places than just sort of rolling up the new box and reskinning the box and putting out all the new stuff."

But will the game truly go the way of Team Fortress and end up in the new "cartoon shooter" genre?

"Oh I doubt that," Lombardi said, laughing.

"I just don't think that [Counter-Strike 2] would be a good fit [with Half-Life Episode 3]," added Valve co-founder Gabe Newell, noting that the potential game would be a stand-alone product in his eyes.

Newell closed with a dangerous challenge: "But if I get 15,000 emails from customers in response to this interview telling me 'Of course it should be in [the next Orange Box],' then of course we'll pay attention to that."

I sure as hell hope they don't rebuild the game from scratch. That would suck. The way they have CSS and 1.6 is just fine. If they change anything gameplay wise, it'll ruin the whole game. They should just improve the graphics, stick to the same formula that works, maybe change a little things here and there, new maps, and they got it. But if they completely change it where it's just the name that's counter strike about it, and the gameplay becomes some Battlefied modern combat shit, i'm not buying.

Counter-Strike was the first shooter I played online on the xbox, I sucked at it, but was good at it on the computer. I would mos def play this, it would be very competitive I bet. Nice find. Hopefully it comes out during the 360's lifespan.

Considering the community obviously has no problems with continuing to play the old versions of CS I think that Valve has the right idea with making a truly new version of the game. Valve are some of the best game designers in the world and I can't wait to see what they make of it.

Oh, and I wouldn't worry about it becoming too much like TF2. While updating CS Valve has shown that they do know what the community wants.

Great videos. To those who don't play, those videos make Counter Strike look very easy. IT ISN'T. It takes a lot of skill just to survive at the end of the round. Especially when you're scrimming. There's always ways to improve which I think is what makes it really addicting. And there really is no better feeling when you take out half the team with a glock.
