Default MLG GoW? Found this on MLGPro. Kinda Long

Grinding the Gears - Tsquared leads squad to
GoW Victory!

November 19, 2006 - 3:21pm
To show off the competitive prowess of the new Xbox 360 title Gears of War, GameStop hosted a special event Saturday night on Major League Gaming’s Main Stage in Las Vegas. The festivities began with a surprise charity exhibition match. Playing for the Autistic Society were Carbon’s top showman Gandhi and TNA’s very own undefeated Samoa Joe. Their opponents in the competition were Tsquared, the charismatic marksman from Str8 Rippin, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Forrest Griffin. The two would be joining forces to play for the USO.

Although playing for charity, the match was not without some light-hearted pre-game trash talk. Samoa Joe opened the banter by coolly pointing at a monitor’s display of Carbon’s 3 – 0 victory over Str8 Rippin, stating, “Looking at the score over there, it looks like I’ve got the better partner.” The crowd cheered at the statement, looking to see yet another chapter in the storied rivalry between Gandhi and Tsquared. Forrest Griffin was quick to retort with his own brand of smack talk: “Big words from someone whose fingers are too fat to push the buttons.” And so the stage was set.

The two teams would be competing in a first-to-five-rounds competition of Gears of War’s Execution gametype. Gandhi and Samoa Joe were quick to take control of the match, seizing the opening three rounds. The team gained their advantage by rushing to the sniper rifle spawning in the center of the stage and landing some key long range shots on their opponents.

It looked like it would be a landslide victory for the two men fighting for the Autistic Society, until Tsquared and Forrest Griffin hit their stride. Tsquared turned the tide in signature style, utilizing the rockets as his power weapon and taking control of the map. The two found continuing success as they stuck together and revived each other before an opposing player could land a life-ending curb stomp.

Bringing his own brand of flair to the match, Tsquared worked the crowd as he spiritedly acted out each of his chainsaw kills on the main stage. A roar from the crowd emerged as Tsquared decimated Gandhi with the shotgun to tie the match at four games each.

However, the show would belong to Samoa Joe, whose match-leading kill count sealed the ninth and final game for his squad. For their efforts, the team won a generous donation from GameStop for their charity of choice, the Autistic Society.

Next up was a Pro-Am event which pitted eight pro players against each other alongside amateur partners chosen through various raffles and preliminary competitions. Saiyan, Karma, T2, Ogre 2, Gandhi, Walshy, Foulacy and Cpt. Anarchy had been chosen to captain the eight teams, and were each joined by three members of the audience and community to fill out their four man squads. The audience members were selected via raffle, and would be fighting for the $5,000 put up for grabs by GameStop.

The single-elimination bracket opened to a match between Team Karma and Team Saiyan, where Karma’s squad stuck tightly together and revived their way to a 3 – 0 victory. The next first round match-up pitted Team Tsquared against Team Ogre 2. Although Ogre 2 produced a valiant effort to force a draw, his team was ultimately winless, and quickly exited the tournament.

Team Gandhi continued the action with a sweep over Team Walshy. The result completed a trio of winless matches for the members of Final Boss, a sign that they likely won’t be dropping their Halo colors for Gears of War any time soon. Team Foulacy rounded out the results with a sweep over Team Cpt Anarchy.

In the semi-final round, Team T2 topped Team Karma to advance to the Championship Match and secure their place in the $5,000 prize pool. Team Foulacy edged out Team Gandhi, completing a duo of Str8 Rippin victories over Carbon members. The wins were a small consolation for the loss they had suffered in Halo’s Winners Bracket Round 2 match.

In the Championship Match, Tsquared’s side forcefully declared their dominance, taking home a cool $4,000 check. Runners-up Team Foulacy were awarded $1,000 for their efforts. In the first live competitive display of Gears of War, we saw an interesting mix of strategy and combat that proved the game to be an able and intriguing competitive title. With Xbox Live traffic for the game skyrocketing, it will only be a matter of time before people really refine the multiplayer side of this game, which will help greatly to mature the competition and strategy in this exciting new game.

I'm not sure that GoW will be able to make it into MLG. I HOPE it will, that would be awesome, but I can't see GoW being "in-depth" enough of a game to make it into MLG. The skill level is a little dull comapred to halo.

What do you mean the skill level is dull compared to halo. Halo 2 is a lot more noobish and a lot easier than
GoW. It is a lot harder to snipe in GoW than halo and all of the weapons in general are a lot harder to use. Plus the game is a lot better balanced than Halo. You may think the chainsaw is too powerfull but it really isn't. After playing the game I have found that if you get chainsawed it is either your own fault or the person that was supposed to be watching your back's fault. If you have a teammate watching your back then nobody will ever get a chainsaw kill on you w/out paying for it with their own life b/c the chainsaw makes you so vulnerable. Gears also involves a lot more teamwork than halo 2 for the reason I stated above and for the simple fact that if you are up against someone that is a good shot you will get dropped insanely fast and having a teammate there to revive you and back you up makes all the difference in the world. I REALLY do hope that GoW is played in MLG b/c quite frankley Halo 2 is very noobish and very easy compared to GoW and in my opinion gears is a lot more "in-depth" than halo 2 is. And i'm not just saying that b/c i'm no good at halo 2 or something like that. I have basically spent my whole life playing halo 1 about a year b4 halo 2 was realeased and then halo 2 since then and I know halo 2 is noobish, especially compared to halo 1 which is still easier to aim in than Gears.

I laugh at MonkeyJam, for many times ignorance IS NOT bliss.

MLG is not ready to host another game as of now. Probably GoW2 will be in the lineup though.

I disagree. In halo, there are many more variables that make gameplay more diverse, and make skill levels differ. For example, the BR. It takes much skill to use, its a center piece weapon with glitches that require skill and headshots which require precision.

In GoW, it is fun, but there isn't really a gun that I can see taking over as the main skill weapon of choice. The Lancer, I think is the equivilant of the SMG, plus a chainsaw bayonet, and that really is the only weapon that could fit the skill weapon persona.

Also, in GoW the head is the smallest point on the body, however it isn't the most effective spot to shoot at with the Lancer. For some reason, game designers decided to move away from the common "LOL HEADSHOTS PWN!" mind set with the Lancer, and they have made it so KNEE shots are now the main focal point for the Lancer's bullet spray. If you want to win a Lancer vs. Lancer fight, shoot your opponent in the knees.

Besides the Longshot (sniper) which does take considerable skill to use, no scopes are also going to be gone as shooting without holding the "L" button with any weapon besides close range shotgun is nearly pointless, and trying to snipe someone with the Longshot without in scope, or even just holding "L" is nearly impossible.

What I'm getting at here is that in GoW not only are there too few weapons, and no "Go-to" skill weapon for an MLG setting, but very many of the skill-requiring tactics of first person shooters have been ousted from this game.

Now don't get me wrong, this doesn't make the game not fun, and this doesn't mean I don't want to see GoW in MLG. I am all for having GoW in MLG, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it won't get in, because not only do they not need another game right now, but by the time GoW COULD get into MLG, Halo 3 will be out, and that will dash its remaining hopes.

Agree to disagree I suppose.

I agree with Monkey in that GoW doesn't have a high enough skill cap or variety to make it to MLG. Halo 2 is noob, but GoW is actually pretty similar in many terms of gameplay when you look at what it takes to be good. GoW is all about teamwork and is very fun, but it doesn't cut it as an MLG game, IMO.
