I've heard that the locations of the gates and the number of gates are both random. That could always be proved wrong, though.

An unfathomable shitload.

As in, FAR more than sixteen. I've closed 21, and thats less than 1/4 the amount of gates. ONce you get to your upper 20s in lvl, you cant go 100 yards without seeing another gate.
