The Emperor gets assassinated, and he gives you an amulet that will keep the Daedra (Bad) out of the world. The emperor's last son has to wear the amulet. While you save his son the amulet gets stolen, and you have to retrieve it. That's as basic as it gets for the main quest. There is also a gazillion other things you can do. Think of it as real life with magic, swords, and bow and arrows. You can basically do whatever you want.
