First off, you need PhotoShop, I am using PhotoShop CS (8) in this tutorial...

Ok, First, drag you image into photoshop, then select the image and on the Layers window right click it and duplicate...


Then delete the layer with the little "lock" on it. (the lock means that it's locked and can't be edited)
Now we select the layer and choose the "Magic Wand Tool" then choose the "6"...

Now we right click the 6 and choose "Layer via Cut"

Now do the same to the red border around the 6 and the red in the middle of the 6...


Now we click the eyeball next to the background copy and Layer 1 and go to Layer-->Merge Visible...

Then, you use magic wand on the "black"(red arrows) or the "white"(blue arrows) then do the same with the eyeball but choose the black or white then layer and merge visible...

Now you should have one layer of the black background, and one of the white.

Now you double click the layer of which you want to change its settings, here are the settings I choose for each...

Now once you have the settings you want, you can add a pattern to make it look a little better...
Go to File-->New. Then choose pixels 5 x 5, then make the background color "Transparent" then choose ok.


Now go to the right upper corner and look at the "Navigator". There will be a bar at the bottom, click that and drag it to the left, making it 1600%. Choose the brush size and make it 1 pixel.

Now choose the "Pencil Tool" and make the color black. Then make 5 pixels in a diagonal direction.


Now go to Edit--> Define Pattern and save it as "lines". Now go back to your avatar then choose Layer--> New Layer. Now go to Edit--> Fill Then choose pattern and choose "lines".


Now go to Opacity above the "Layers" window and make it around 25%.

This is what I got for the finished product

You're Done! Now go to File-->Save as and make the format--> jpeg and choose save.
