but I'm pretty sure you're referring to h.264, not x264. And yeah, especiallly if you capture 480p which I would recommend. Then you don't need to deinterlace (it's already progressive) and it looks fucking awesome already from it being component, etc... IMO, that is the best quality that a montage should go (but if anyone out there could make it above it, 720p+, I'm certainly not stopping, slowing, or trying to make you capture anything less =P) but above 480p c.c's could get pretty daammnn expensive....

You have Overlay or Preview selected. It doesn't matter on some capture cards, but others it will only let you see a preview on one or the other.
Also, under Preview Acceleration, you should select off.
When you actually capture, it's recommended that you turn preview off, as it makes it lag a great deal and you get more frames/better quality when no display is checked when capturing. Also, when you capture, make sure you hit F6, not F5. F5 is not as good as a capture as F6 is. I don't really know why, I saw it on the vdub site a while back, I'll go look up the reason now... | Did you try that?
Make sure the video cables are also plugged in correctly >.>
