This was a tutuorial my brother (Brass) and I created a while back. It is for everybody who wants to make a great montage or simply record without having a capture card.
It seems pretty simple, but this is how you make it not laggy.
As the title suggests, this tutorial will be telling you how to make a montage with a dvd recorder. It's for those of us that love playing halo but don't have the capabilities to make a montage due to either not having a capture card or are having your xbox not next to your computer. I have found that recording with a dvd recorder will give you even better quality than a Dazzle 90, but not better than a Dazzle 150. It's kind of in between. So if you have a dvd recorder, no capture card, and are looking to make a montage, than keep reading!
1. Supplies you need
You will only need a handful of supplies to produce top quality footage with your dvd recorder. It will require the following supplies:
1.
Monster® GameLink 100 Xbox® Composite/S-Video A/V Cable
2.
2 RCA Couplers
3.
1 RCA Video Coupler
4.
1 A/V Cable
5.
2 RCA Audio Splitters
6. DVD+RW's - Found at any local Wal Mart, Target, or Office Max.
7. Any DVD Ripping software -
InterVideo DVD Copy 4 Just download the free trial. BTW, any dvd ripping program would work, thats my favorite.
8.
2 RCA Audio Cables 2. Setting up your Xbox and Recorder
Take out your current A/V cable from xbox, and put in the Monster GameLink cable. Having this will allow you to play on your tv screen, but record on your dvd recorder with ther S-Video cable. The reasoning for this is when you split just a regular A/V cable, when you split the video section of it, your tv screen darkens extremely, making it almost unbearable to play. Also, sometimes there can be a considerable amount of lag playing through your dvd recorder.
Next, connect your 2 RCA Audio Couplers to the red and white cables on the end of the Monster GameLink cable, and the Video coupler on the yellow one.
Next, get out your splitters, and attatch each splitter to the correct area. The red to the red, white to the white, and so on.
Now take your new A/V cable you bought and connect it to the splitters and video coupler. Make sure they match up in color.
Connect your A/V cable that you connected to the splitters in the front or rear AV jacks on your television. Turn on your xbox, and make sure you see the video and hear the audio. If you don't, then go back and make sure all of your cables are the same color together.
Your splitters will each be left with one empty female cable, so attatch the rca audio cables to these.
Connect your S-Video Cable from your Monster GameLink cable to a port in the DVD Recorder, and connect both rca cables to the same section on your Dvd recorder.
Make sure the DVD Recorder is connected to the TV, and turn on your dvd recorder along with your xbox. Go to the input or line on your tv that your dvd recorder is on so you can see your screen of your recorder. Go to source, and select what input on the dvd recorder the S-Video Cable and Rca audio cables are connected to (i.e. S-Video in 1, A/V in 2, etc.) Put in your DVD+RW (you use an RW because then you don't waste any dvd's each time you record, just simply erase and start over) and wait until the screen with your xbox playing comes up.
When that happens, go to the input or line on your tv that your xbox is actually connected to, NOT the dvd recorder. Playing on the tv will result in no lag and better picture. Just start playing, and press record when ready.
Uploading to your Computer
It is very easy to upload the captured video to your computer. You can use various DVD Ripper software, and I just gave the link to one. It all depends on your personal liking of whatever one you choose. Once uploaded, you can use Vegas Video, Adobe Premiere Pro, or even Windows Movie Maker to create an award winning montage.
THE END
EDIT: LInks Fixed
EDIT: AN even easier way of recording with a DVD Recorder is if you have a VCR. If you have a vcr, there should be a LINE IN. Plug your xbox chords into that, and in the LINE OUT, plug in a standard 3-6 feet long a/v cable, and connect that to your DVD Recorder.
INTERVIDEO DVDCOPY 4: Ok, here's the thing about this program. Just to let you know, you will lose hardly ANY quality using it, but it will take 3-4 hours to upload each dvd.
Use the WMV format as well. This is for best quality. There is a hammer looking icon on the right of the program screen, click that, and change the resolution to high quality.
Here's my quality right now: Click Here
Transferring to VCR from Recorder: Ok, first off, you DO NOT use your line out function of your vcr. Your line out is used to send whatever is in the line in slot. You must use the
Ant Out (Cable Chords). Plug the end of the cable chord in the
Ant In (on your recorder). Go to the ant in setting on your recorder till it pops up, then play the tape in your vcr, and press record on your player.
Also: YOU CAN'T SPLIT COMPOSITE VIDEO. THE SCREEN WILL DARKEN DRAMATICALLY. PM me for questions.
Also: You must
FINALIZE (make compatible) your dvd's before playing them in your computer or another dvd player)

RECORDING A MONTAGE WITH A DVD RECORDER
Step 1:
Connect your Xbox to the “External 1” of your TV
External 1
TV
Step 2:
Plug THIS cable into “External 2” of your TV
Step 3:
Plug the end of THIS cable (end = red – white – yellow) into your Cam 1 (or other composite entrance) of your DVD recorder.
Step 4:
Plug an S-video cable into the S-video OUT of your DVD recorder. Plug the other end of the S-video cable into the S-video IN of your TV.
- For sound you should plug the red and white chords of a composite cable into the Composite OUT of your DVD recorder. Plug the other red and white chords at the end of the composite cable into the composite IN of your TV.
(see picture)
Ready to record!!
Now you will be able to play on a “non-lagging” screen and record at the same time. You have to make sure that your Xbox and TV are turned on otherwise your DVD recorder will give the message that it hasn’t got a signal.
You can record original xbox, ps2, gamecube, and our precious 360's. You will have to buy an adapter to record withe the ghetto systems (SNES, NES, GENESIS).
