Portfolio Value: 0.000 Gain/Loss: 0.000 | menu based combat system, is exactly what it sounds like, if you know Final Fantasy you obviously know what it means, its a menu that comes up during your battle, allows you to choose your attack or magic and when you select it, your character will execute that action, when its their turn.

Portfolio Value: 1,771.00 Gain/Loss: 0 | well, exactly what I thought, but what the hell difference does it make if you have to wait for your turn vs. fighting in real time. That seems like a retarded reason for something to not be an RPG. Either way you are still fighting, and carrying out a story that is not classified as: Racing, FPS, TPS or any other category. Its not like you can just run around like a madman and constantly swing your sword in any real time system. There is still strategy in choosing when to block, when to cast certain things, usage of extra items. I don't think either style is any less fun to play necessarily but the distinguishing factor just seems petty to me. |

Oblivion...best RPG ever...lulz.
FFVI is the best ever. I don't expect to get much support for this decision, but that's mainly because it came out the same year some of you were born XP |

I support!
I've gone back and played it. Although I somewhat like FFVII better, I still think FFVI is a better game overall. |

| Well, I was attempting to make the point without watering down the categories in the way you did. If a game doesn't have some type of action gets pretty boring no matter what the type. This is why I said different from FPS TPS racing etc. Is there really no action in FF games, is there no grand adventure to go on killing things with weapons and magic? And in your thing, if it falls under Action/Adventure/RPG, then how the hell is it not RPG. Looks like RPG in there to me. |

Portfolio Value: 0.000 Gain/Loss: 0.000 | The definition of an RPG has become so complex and convoluted that saying such and such is an rpg or is not really doesn’t make sense. Like it or not the term RPG has evolved way past the simple turn based Final Fantasy games ( like 1, 2, or 3) or strategy games (A la Final Fantasy Tactics, or Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced).
Instead of a game being a simple RPG they now have many many more sub-categories that the game can fit under. You have SRPG’s, Turn based RPG’s, Active Turn based RPG’s, MMORPG’s, and Action RPG’s (which have just as much credence as an rpg then any other kind) to name a few. You can also generalize it a little more and split it into into big categories, the eastern RPGs (very traditional and normally linear) or the western RPGs (usually diverse and more free form).
There are also games that have RPG-like elements; games like GTA: San Andreas or Shadowrun feature RPGish elements.
While many won’t agree with this, The Elder Scrolls is just as much an RPG as any Final Fantasy game out there. Just because it’s a different type of RPG doesn’t make any less of one.
And as for my favourite RPG to date (asking for the best is too much, everyone has their own opinion)… I would have to say Knights of the Old Republic or World of Warcraft. But I have a feeling my opinion is going to change come November when Mass Effect hits store shelves. |

An RPG is where you run around leveling up on monsters so you can do quests and such... Thats what you do in final fantasy and Oblivion isn't it?
Oh yeah and Cater Golden Sun FTW. I still can't beat the last djinn summon thing after you have all of the djinn in golden sun 2, that thing is a bitch to beat even with my characters level 70+.
But FF2 is the best RPG ever.
