do you get anything for gettign to the next level in the rewards system or do you get stuff by just winning challenges

If you increased your GS by 1500 points and you signed up for the challenge and all click that you finished it and you will be rewarded with whatever is left. Chances are thats nothing...

If you complete the challenge and aren't already level 3 you go up to the next one and get the prizes for the level you are in right now. Then when the next challenge comes you get better prizes because you went up a level from doing this one.
