M$ isn't a company. | If you are talking about Xbox Live activity as a whole, then it makes no difference. Their engines are powerful enough to run millions and millions of users. Do you not remember when Halo 3 was first launched? I saw close to 2,000,000 people currently online for a few days, and that's only Halo 3.
Check out G4, ATOS, the feed was about the downtime. They think it's to do with the convention/event happening next week.

On the other, they should've been able to make estimates based on hardware sales and they should have had some sort of contingency plan in place for high traffic situationslike this since the outset of XBL.

And who gets an Xbox for anything but Xbox Live?
This means tons of people were signing up. They could have upped their server number for it, unless the server is just a cover for a completely different problem.
